A Vibrant Winter Festival
Upington – Northern Cape
Inspiration comes in many forms and this month’s Vibrant Winter Festival showcases just how to pull off an autumn or winter wedding celebration in our beautiful Northern Cape region.
Autumn or winter can be a magical time in the Northern Cape and have become a desired time of the year for weddings. Enhancing warmer tones in your floral arrangements and balancing it out with soft greys, compliment clean, minimal, and elegant décor arrangements. An autumn or winter wedding can be the perfect blend of simplicity and romance.
We asked photographer Jonelda van Heerden (also an employee of Tent Rent Company), to tell us how they brought all the elements together at the Vibrant Winter Festival.
“Tent Rent Company collaborated with some of Upington’s most talented wedding vendors to execute a highly professional, styled shoot. When I picture wintertime in the Northern Cape, I picture naked pecan trees and the ground covered with fallen leaves. We loved the high contrasts of our colourful décor & floral arrangements with the, dare I say – dull, lifeless nudes we see in this pecan orchard near Upington.
Even though we appreciate traditional wedding décor, we were excited about trying something new and pushing the boundaries toward a unique style. We believe this styled shoot showcases each vendor’s capabilities and creativity. When Christa – creative director at Tent Rent Company – proposed the idea, we asked some of our favourite vendors in Upington to join us, and everyone shared in our excitement.
There was no primary colour scheme. We decided to play with blush, maroon, blue hues, and rose gold. Currently we believe the most sought after wedding flower is the Blush Peony. These combined with pink Tulips, purple Anthuriums, maroon Carnation, and red Celosia, created a vibrant and colourful arrangement. We used the Dusty Miller to tone down the richness of all these intense colours.”
The wedding cake
was made by Lauren Bezuidenhout from Takes the Cake. Soft vanilla pod sponge with salted caramel layers. For this specific styled winter shoot, she chose the fashionable light grey marble effect, with a hint of gold complimenting the décor. She topped off the cake with deep, colourful flowers to blend in with the bouquets.
Lauren says, “I have taught myself everything I know when it comes to cake baking and design, and I am always looking for new occasions and events to try new techniques or trending designs for my cakes. When Jonelda asked me if I would like to bake something, I didn’t hesitate.”
The beautiful model of the day was Elske Swart. She is one of the décor coordinators at Tent Rent Company. Her naturally beautiful red hair and flawless skin was exactly the look they were going for.
Elske says, “This was such an exciting experience for me. I had never done any modeling before, but I would definitely do it again! It was so much fun being part of something like this.”
The romantic wedding gown from Mark of B Couture transformed and enhanced her natural colour.
Betty van der Walt from Mark of B Couture describes, “Winter bare trees against a cold, grey sky. A table set for a feast, the cold expelled by warm colours of plum, wine red and moss green. Perfectly finished with fine lace, set on a simplistic wooden table. The wedding dress – nostalgic, with soft lines and expensive lace, combined with soft tulle. A beautiful bride who gave the perfect picture a feminine elegance…”
Elske’s makeup was done by Chrisna Roos from The Wellness Clinic, and her hair was done by Ansori Badenhorst from Yafah Beautiful Ashes. Ansari says, “I went for something other than the usual, but romantic…with a touch of drama. It was a pleasant experience. I loved working together with other businesses and building friendships.”
The contrasting colour scheme for the cozy, winter wedding, against the minimalist, natural setting was just beautiful.
With the winter wedding season at hand, be inspired with romantic, dreamy flower arrangements, and earthy deep colours, although always ensure that you feel comfortable on your wedding day, as the look you will be wearing should be an extension of you.
